Our 2021 MASST Chief Youth Courage Award winner is Mikhail. Mikhail was referred to MASST when he was eight years old and in the third grade. At the time, he was struggling to reach his academic potential and would sometimes act out towards his peers. Mikhail’s mother moved to Calgary from Jamaica before Mikhail was born and she had not yet developed a strong support system in the city. To make matters worse, Mikhail’s father had recently walked out on their family. That is when MASST stepped in.

Mikhail’s MASST team was able to provide him with much needed mentorship, include him in a variety of pro-social activities, and help connect their family with community resources. Mikhail also seemed to benefit from incorporating movement breaks and mindful minutes into his day. This helped increase his academic output and helped him regulate his emotions when he became overwhelmed.

Mikhail enjoyed taking part in MASST events and his team began looking into recreation options for him. That is where Mikhail discovered his love of basketball. Through this new found passion, Mikhail was able to channel his extra energy into something positive, learn dedication and commitment, and embrace working on a team.

Overall, with the support of MASST, Mikhail has made incredible progress at school and at home. He has developed the skills he needs to handle the ups and downs of growing up and we have no doubt that he has a bright future ahead of him.
